UK Manufacturer of special fasteners & precision components

Precision Cold Formed Fasteners Manufactured in the UK

We manufacture standard and bespoke cold formed fasteners for demanding industrial applications. Using cold heading and thread-rolling processes, our experienced UK team produces strong, dimensionally consistent and cost-effective screws, bolts, pins and specialist fasteners in carbon steel, stainless steel and alloy grades. Custom tooling, material certification and a wide range of protective finishes are also available.

Precision Cold Formed Fasteners Manufactured in the UK

Pattern Fasteners manufactures high-quality cold formed fasteners for customers across the UK and beyond.

Cold forming — also known as cold heading — shapes metal at or near room temperature using high pressure rather than heat. This process creates stronger, more consistent, and cost-efficient fasteners with minimal material waste.

With over 40 years of manufacturing experience and in-house tooling capability, we produce both standard and bespoke cold formed fasteners for demanding industries including automotive, aerospace, electronics, and construction.

What Are Cold Formed Fasteners?

Cold formed fasteners are produced by feeding wire into a forming press, cutting it to length, and striking it in a closed die cavity under high pressure to create the desired head shape. Because the metal is never melted or machined, its internal grain flow remains continuous — resulting in a dense, high-strength fastener with excellent dimensional accuracy and surface finish.

After forming, threads are typically rolled or cut depending on the application. This combination of cold heading and thread rolling ensures repeatable quality at high production speeds.

Our Cold Forming Capabilities

At Pattern Fasteners, our modern cold heading and thread-rolling equipment enables efficient production of small to medium-sized fasteners in a wide range of materials.

Material Diameter Range Length Range Head Styles Strength Grades Finishes / Coatings
Carbon steel (C10–C45) 3 mm – 20 mm Up to 200 mm Hex, socket, dome, flange, custom 8.8 / 10.9 / 12.9 Zinc, phosphate, black oxide, bright, chrome
Stainless steel (A2 / A4) 3 mm – 12 mm Up to 150 mm Hex, dome, pan, special A2-70 / A4-80 Passivated, bright finish
Alloy & special steels 3 mm – 20 mm Up to 200 mm Custom To specification As required

We can also supply BS EN 10204 3.1 material certificates and full traceability on request. Our engineers work with customers to design custom tooling for non-standard shapes or specialist applications.

Benefits of the Cold Forming Process

  • Exceptional strengthCold forming compresses and realigns the metal’s grain structure, improving tensile and shear performance.
  • Minimal material wasteNo chips or offcuts — almost 100 % of the wire becomes the finished part.
  • Superior consistencyIdeal for high-volume production with tight dimensional tolerances.
  • Cost-effective manufacturingFast cycle times and low material waste reduce cost per part.
  • Improved surface finishCold forming produces smooth, work-hardened surfaces ready for finishing.
  • SustainabilityReduced energy consumption compared with hot forging or machining.

Cold Formed Fasteners FAQ's

Cold forming shapes metal at room temperature using pressure; hot forging uses heat. Cold forming offers better dimensional accuracy and material strength with less waste.
Most low and medium carbon steels, stainless steels (A2, A4), brass and copper alloys can be cold formed depending on ductility and design.
We manufacture diameters from approximately 3 mm to 20 mm and lengths up to 200 mm. Custom tooling is available for special sizes.
Yes. The cold forming process naturally strengthens the metal, and we can supply fasteners in property classes 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9.
Standard parts can often be produced in a few weeks; custom tooling or new designs may require additional time for sampling and approval.
