However, not every application can be satisfied by an off-the-shelf standard component. Many projects require a modified fastener, an unusual material, a non-standard thread, tighter tolerances or a completely bespoke precision-turned part.

ISO standards are produced by the International Organization for Standardization and are used throughout global engineering and manufacturing.
For fasteners and precision components, ISO standards can govern product dimensions, thread geometry, mechanical properties, tolerances, coatings and inspection procedures.
Common examples include the following.
ISO 4017 specifies the characteristics of fully threaded hexagon head screws in steel and stainless steel. The standard covers metric coarse-pitch threads and product grades relating to dimensional tolerance.
A standard such as ISO 4017 may be used when a conventional fully threaded hexagon screw is required. It can also provide a useful starting point for a special fastener with a modified length, unusual thread, different material or additional machined feature.
ISO 4032 applies to regular-style hexagon nuts manufactured in steel or stainless steel. It defines characteristics including dimensions, thread ranges and product grades.

Where a standard nut does not meet the application, features such as the thread, width across flats, height, flange, locking arrangement or material can be modified.
ISO 4762 specifies the characteristics of hexagon socket head cap screws. These fasteners are widely used where a strong fixing is required but there is limited external space around the screw head.

ISO 7089 is associated with normal-series plain washers of product grade A. Washer standards can define features including internal diameter, external diameter, thickness, hardness and dimensional tolerance.
Standard pressed washers are suitable for many general applications, but certain assemblies require a more accurate or substantial component. These can be manufactured to a recognised standard or to a customer’s bespoke dimensions.
Dowel pins are used to locate, align or retain two or more parts within an assembly. Applicable ISO specifications can define the pin’s diameter, length, end form, hardness, surface finish and tolerance.
The tolerance of a dowel pin is particularly important because it determines the type of fit created between the pin and its receiving hole. Pattern Fasteners manufactures plain and tapped dowel pins in metric and imperial sizes, including non-standard pins for applications where a conventional catalogue component is unsuitable.
DIN standards are developed by the Deutsches Institut für Normung, the German Institute for Standardization. They have been used extensively across European engineering and remain common on manufacturing drawings, particularly for established equipment and legacy designs.
Many DIN fastener specifications have equivalent or closely related ISO standards. For example, DIN 912 is historically associated with the socket head cap screw now commonly specified under ISO 4762.
Nevertheless, engineers should not automatically assume that a DIN component and its ISO counterpart are identical. Small differences may exist in dimensions, tolerances, thread lengths, head details or technical requirements. The exact edition and designation shown on the drawing should therefore be checked.

DIN standards are especially relevant when replacement parts are being produced for existing European machinery. Even when the required part is no longer readily available, the original DIN designation can provide valuable information for recreating or adapting it.
British Standards use the prefix BS and are published in the UK by BSI. Some remain specifically British, while others adopt European or international standards.
Common designations include:
BS – British Standard
BS EN – a European standard adopted as a British Standard
BS EN ISO – an ISO standard adopted at European and British levels
Older machinery and engineering drawings may refer to traditional British Standards for bolts, nuts, washers, pins, threads and materials. These standards can still be important when producing maintenance components, replacement fasteners or parts for legacy equipment.

Dimensional accuracy alone does not determine whether a fastener is suitable. Its material strength, hardness and mechanical performance must also be considered.
The ISO 898 series covers the mechanical and physical properties of fasteners manufactured from carbon steel and alloy steel. Different parts of the series apply to bolts, screws, studs, nuts, washers and set screws.

These markings relate to the mechanical properties of the fastener, including tensile strength and yield-related performance. The appropriate property class depends on the load, environment and safety requirements of the assembly.
The ISO 3506 series covers mechanical properties for corrosion-resistant stainless-steel fasteners. Stainless fasteners may be identified using designations such as A2-70 or A4-80, which communicate information about the stainless-steel group and strength class.
The correct stainless grade should be chosen according to the environment. A component used in a general indoor application may have different requirements from one intended for marine, chemical, food-processing or oil and gas equipment.

The thread is one of the most critical features of a fastener. A thread standard controls characteristics such as its profile, nominal diameter, pitch and tolerance class.

When only the diameter is stated, the standard coarse pitch is normally understood. A pitch is added to the designation when a fine or otherwise non-standard pitch is required.
The ISO 965 series establishes tolerance systems and size limits for general-purpose metric screw threads. Common tolerance classes include 6g for external threads and 6H for internal threads, although the correct class depends on the required fit and application.
Imperial threads remain widely used in older British equipment, American machinery and several specialist industries.

A specification may identify the material using a British, European, American or trade designation. It is therefore common for one material to have several related names.

Material traceability may also be required. BS EN 10204 defines types of inspection documentation for metallic products. A 3.1 inspection certificate is commonly requested where confirmation of the material’s chemical composition and mechanical test results is needed.
