Shoulder Bolts

Pattern Fasteners manufactures special and bespoke shoulder bolts for applications requiring an accurately machined shoulder, bearing surface, pivot or locating feature.

Sometimes referred to as shoulder screws or stripper bolts, these fasteners consist of a head, a smooth unthreaded shoulder and a smaller-diameter threaded section.

The accurately controlled shoulder distinguishes them from conventional bolts and enables the component to perform both a fastening and mechanical locating function.

What Are Shoulder Bolts Used For?

The smooth shoulder can act as a:

  • Pivot or axle

  • Bearing surface

  • Guide

  • Stop

  • Spacer

  • Location feature

  • Sliding surface

This makes shoulder bolts particularly useful in machinery, tooling, automation, fixtures, linkages and other engineered assemblies containing moving or accurately positioned components.

Custom Shoulder Bolts

Standard shoulder bolts are available to specifications such as ISO 7379, but many engineering applications require dimensions or features outside standard ranges.

Pattern Fasteners can manufacture shoulder bolts with custom:

  • Shoulder diameters

  • Shoulder lengths

  • Thread sizes and pitches

  • Head diameters and depths

  • Drive types

  • Overall lengths

  • Tolerances

  • Materials

  • Finishes

Additional features such as cross holes, flats, grooves, undercuts or special ends can also be incorporated.

Precision-Machined Shoulders

The shoulder is often a functional surface rather than simply an unthreaded portion of the fastener.

Where a shoulder interfaces with a bearing, bush, linkage or precision bore, its diameter, surface finish and tolerance can be manufactured to suit the application.

This allows bespoke shoulder bolts to combine fastening, spacing and location functions within a single component.

Shoulder Bolts Made to Drawing

If a standard shoulder bolt does not provide the required dimensions, material or mechanical features, we can manufacture directly from your engineering drawing or sample.
